What is a WISDOM Coach®?
A WISDOM Coach® is a trained and certified children’s life coach who delivers WISDOM Coaching: a story-based, skills-focused coaching approach created by Adventures in Wisdom to help children build the mindset and the skill set for confidence, self-esteem, resilience, emotional awareness, self-leadership, and achievement.
WISDOM Coaches® are trained and certified exclusively by Adventures in Wisdom, the creator and steward of the WISDOM Coaching® methodology.
WISDOM Coaches work live with children, in person or on line, either one-on-one, in small groups, or in workshops, using the innovative The Adventures in Wisdom Life Coaching for Kids Curriculum (2010) and the proven STORY Coaching Process™. Through stories, guided conversation, experiential activities, and real-life application, WISDOM Coaches help children learn mindset skills they can use in everyday situations.
The designation WISDOM Coach® is a registered trademark and may only be used by individuals who have completed certification through Adventures in Wisdom. Certification ensures that every WISDOM Coach is trained to deliver coaching in a way that is child-centered, non-therapeutic, ethically grounded, and consistent with the WISDOM Coaching methodology.
At its heart, a WISDOM Coach® supports children by teaching a defined set of 27 core mindset skills and life skills developed by Adventures in Wisdom. The skills help children understand how their mind works, navigate emotions, develop healthy self-talk, build confidence and self-esteem from the inside out, bounce back from disappointments, manage change, become self-leaders, and achieve their goals.
Who Created WISDOM Coach® Role?
The WISDOM Coach® role was created by Adventures in Wisdom® as part of the development of the WISDOM Coaching™ methodology, under the leadership of its founder, Renaye Thornborrow.
As WISDOM Coaching was being developed, it became clear that the effectiveness of the approach depended not only on the coaching curriculum, but on how it was delivered. Children needed coaches who could create emotional safety, guide meaningful conversations, and help them apply mindset skills in real life.
The WISDOM Coach® role was intentionally designed to ensure:
- Consistent, high-quality delivery of WISDOM Coaching
- Clear ethical boundaries and scope of practice
- A child-centered, non-therapeutic coaching approach
- Effective use of the Adventures in Wisdom curriculum and STORY Coaching™ Process
From the beginning, the role of a WISDOM Coach was created as a distinct, trained, and certified role to protect the integrity of the coaching experience and ensure children everywhere receive the same effective, skills-based support.
Since its creation in 2013, the WISDOM Coach® role has been carried forward through a global community of certified coaches working with children and families in more than 30 countries, guided by a shared methodology, common language, and a commitment to helping children build skills that last a lifetime.
What Does a WISDOM Coach® Do?
A WISDOM Coach® works directly with children to help them develop practical mindset skills and life skills that support confidence, self-esteem, resilience, emotional awareness, self-leadership, and achievement.
Rather than giving advice or correcting behavior, a WISDOM Coach guides children through an experiential learning process that uses stories and activities to help them understand how their mind works, reflect on their experiences, and practice new skills they can apply in everyday life.
WISDOM Coaches typically work with children:
- One-on-one, in small groups, or workshops
- In live coaching sessions (in person or online)
- Using stories, guided conversation, experiential activities, and reflection
Each session is designed to be engaging, supportive, and developmentally appropriate, allowing children to learn at their own pace in an emotionally safe environment.
Teaching Mindset Skills and Life Skills
At the heart of what a WISDOM Coach® does is teaching children the inner skills they need to navigate life with confidence and self-leadership. Rather than focusing on behavior in the moment, WISDOM Coaching is designed to help children build a strong internal foundation they can rely on across many situations and stages of life.
WISDOM Coaches teach a defined set of 27 mindset skills and life skills that support children’s emotional, social, and personal growth using The Adventures in Wisdom Life Coaching for Kids Curriculum. These skills are intentionally sequenced to help children discover the power of their mind so that they understand how their thoughts, feelings, and choices are connected and how to work with them to be more empowered in their lives.
Some of the core skills children develop through WISDOM Coaching include:
- Building self-esteem and a healthy sense of self-identity
- Developing confidence and belief in themselves
- Learning positive and supportive self-talk
- Strengthening resilience and perseverance
- Practicing self-leadership and personal responsibility
- Learning how to set and achieve goals
These skills are introduced through stories, explored through guided conversation and activities, and practiced through real-life application. This approach helps children internalize what they are learning so that the skills become part of how they think.
Over time, children begin using these skills naturally in school, relationships, and everyday challenges, creating growth that lasts well beyond a single coaching session.
Creating an Emotionally Safe Coaching Space
One of the most important roles of a WISDOM Coach® is creating an environment where children feel emotionally safe enough to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Many children move through their day being corrected, evaluated, or rushed. WISDOM Coaching intentionally slows things down and offers a space where a child can simply be themselves.
Within this supportive coaching relationship, children are invited to notice what’s going on inside and learn new empowering ways of responding. .
WISDOM Coaches are trained to create a coaching environment where children feel:
- Seen and heard
- Respected and accepted
- Safe to share thoughts and feelings
- Encouraged to explore challenges without fear of judgment
This sense of emotional safety is essential to meaningful learning and growth, especially when children are developing new ways of thinking about themselves and the world.
Helping Children Apply Skills to Real Life
WISDOM Coaching is designed to support children beyond the coaching session so that they can apply skills to their everyday lives.
For example, a child who learned about self-talk in a coaching session may notice negative thoughts creeping in before a test or when homework feels hard. Instead of shutting down or saying “I can’t do this,” they notice their grungy feelings, pause to notice their thoughts, recognize what’s happening, and choose a more supportive way of thinking. That shift can change how the child feels and responds in the moment, helping them feel more empowered.
WISDOM Coaches help children connect what they learn in coaching sessions to real situations, such as:
- School and learning challenges, like managing test anxiety, staying focused, or working through frustration when something feels difficult
- Friendships and social situations, including speaking up, navigating disagreements, handling feelings of exclusion, or managing peer pressure
- Trying new things or facing setbacks, such as joining a new activity, making a mistake, experiencing a disappointment, facing a change, or not succeeding right away
- Personal responsibilities, such as completing their homework and household responsibilities and being a kind and respectful member of their family
- Learning to achieve their goals and see themselves as bigger than their circumstances
WISDOM Coaches support learning that carries beyond the session and into daily life. Helping children build confidence and self-trust that will empower them for years to come.
Partnering with Parents While Focusing on the Child
A WISDOM Coach is part of a child’s “team” and a parent’s team. And while the child is always at the center of the WISDOM Coaching experience, parents play an important role. Many parents want to help their child build confidence and emotional skills, but aren’t sure what to say or how to respond in the moment.
WISDOM Coaching helps bridge that gap by giving parents insight into the skills their child is learning, without turning parents into coaches or adding pressure to “do it right.”
WISDOM Coaches often partner with parents by:
- Offering simple, supportive language parents can naturally reinforce at home.
- Sharing the skills being taught, so parents understand the language and concepts their child is learning. Each session has a take-home sheet that supports continued conversations at home.
- Checking in between sessions, so questions can be answered between sessions
- Encouraging consistent application of skills, helping children practice in everyday moments
This partnership creates continuity between coaching sessions and daily life, reinforcing learning while still honoring the child’s independence.
What a WISDOM Coach® Is Not
WISDOM Coaching is designed to be supportive, empowering, and skill-based. It’s also important to understand what a WISDOM Coach does not do. These boundaries are important to understand so that the child receives the support they need.
Not a Therapist or Counselor
WISDOM Coaches are not therapists or counselors, and WISDOM Coaching is not therapy.
While children may talk about emotions or challenges during coaching sessions, the purpose is not to diagnose, treat, or resolve mental health conditions. Instead, the focus is on teaching practical mindset skills and life skills children can use in everyday situations. Self-talk is an excellent example of this. When a child discovers the power of their thoughts, they learn that they can shift “I can’t” to “How can I” and “I’m stupid” to “I’m learning every day”.
When a child needs therapeutic or clinical support, WISDOM Coaches will encourage families to seek care from licensed mental health professionals.
Note: some therapists and counselors do add WISDOM Coaching to their services. How this works within their individual practice is discussed with each parent.
Not a Tutor or Academic Instructor
Although children may talk about school or learning challenges, WISDOM Coaches are not tutors or academic instructors.
Rather than teaching specific academic content, WISDOM Coaches support the mindset skills that help children approach learning with confidence, such as self-talk, perseverance, self-responsibility, integrity, and problem-solving.
Coaching complements academic support without replacing it.
Note: often educators and tutors add WISDOM Coaching to their services. How this works is discussed with each parent.
Not a Problem-Fixer or Advice-Giver
WISDOM Coaches do not tell children what to do or solve problems for them.
Instead of offering quick solutions, coaches guide children to reflect, explore options, and discover their own insights. This approach helps children build self-trust and confidence in their ability to navigate challenges independently.
The goal is empowerment, not dependence, so that children can become self-leaders and use skills moving forward.
Not a Replacement for Parents or Caregivers
WISDOM Coaches do not take the place of parents or caregivers.
Parents remain the most important and influential people in a child’s life. Coaching is designed to support family relationships, values, and parenting approaches.
WISDOM Coaching works best when it complements the care, guidance, and love children already receive at home.
These boundaries between therapy, academics, and parenting help ensure that WISDOM Coaching remains a clear, ethical, and child-centered coaching experience, focused on teaching skills and supporting healthy development in ways that are appropriate and empowering.
Why Certification Matters
Working with children is a responsibility. The way skills are introduced, conversations are guided, and trust is built can have a lasting impact on how a child sees themselves and the world. That’s why certification matters in WISDOM Coaching.
The WISDOM Coach® designation was intentionally created as a trained and certified role. Certification ensures that WISDOM Coaching is delivered with consistency, care, and integrity, centered on the child’s emotional safety and skill development.
Certified WISDOM Coaches are trained to create supportive coaching environments, use stories, conversations, and activities to guide the coaching session, and guide reflection without judgment. They are also trained to maintain clear ethical boundaries, including understanding the difference between coaching and therapy and recognizing when a child’s needs fall outside the scope of coaching.
Certification also ensures consistency. WISDOM Coaching is a proprietary, story-based approach created and stewarded by Adventures in Wisdom, and certification helps ensure that children and families experience the coaching as it was designed, no matter where or by whom it is delivered.
The title WISDOM Coach® is a registered trademark, and certification protects the integrity of that designation. For families, this means confidence in the training, standards, and care behind the role. For children, it means working with a coach who is prepared to support their growth with respect and intention. And for coaches it means being part of a proven reputable program that will help them facilitate results with children.
Who Becomes a WISDOM Coach®?
People who become WISDOM Coaches® share something in common. They are passionate about empowering children and helping them develop skills for confidence, self-esteem, resilience, self-leadership, and achievement. They value personal development and mindset work. And they believe that empowering children helps them fulfil their purpose in the world..
Many people are drawn to WISDOM Coaching because they believe that children are our future and they recognize that helping children build inner strength and self-leadership doesn’t just change that child’s life, it also shapes families, classrooms, communities, and our world.
A Shared Calling, Many Backgrounds
WISDOM Coaches come from a wide range of backgrounds, but they are united by a shared intention: helping children grow into confident, capable, and resilient individuals.
Many WISDOM Coaches are educators and tutors who are passionate about developing the whole child. They see firsthand that academic success is deeply connected to mindset, confidence, and social-emotional learning, and they want tools that help children believe in themselves and persevere through challenges.
Some WISDOM Coaches are counselors or therapists who value proactive, skills-based support. They are drawn to WISDOM Coaching as a way to help children develop resilience, coping skills, and emotional awareness before challenges become overwhelming, adding powerful, non-therapeutic tools to their professional toolkit.
Others come from roles such as sports coaching, extracurricular teaching, and youth programs. These individuals understand that mindset plays a critical role in success, not only on the field or stage, but in how children respond to pressure, setbacks, and self-doubt. They see WISDOM Coaching as a way to support children’s inner game alongside their talents and abilities.
Many WISDOM Coaches are also parents, grandparents, and caregivers. Often, they begin with a desire to support the children in their own lives. As they see the impact of mindset skills in action, that desire naturally expands into helping other children as well.
And many are in helping professions such as healthcare, volunteers, spiritual leaders, and advocacy. Who wants to make a positive difference in the lives of children.
At the heart of it all, WISDOM Coaches are people who believe in children. They believe in children’s capacity to grow, to learn, and to develop the skills they need to navigate life with confidence and self-leadership. Becoming a WISDOM Coach® is an expression of that belief and a way to put it into action.
The Impact of a WISDOM Coach®
The impact of a WISDOM Coach® shows up in how a child talks to themselves, how they respond to challenges, and how they begin to trust their own voice and choices.
WISDOM Coaches help children see themselves with more confidence, compassion, and belief in their ability to grow. Over time, those inner shifts begin to shape how children show up in the world.
Impact on Children
Through consistent, skill-based coaching, children often begin to:
- Approach challenges with greater courage and confidence
- Recognize and manage their emotions more effectively
- Develop healthier self-talk and self-belief
- Take ownership of their choices and behavior
- Feel more capable navigating school, friendships, and new experiences
- Bounce back from disappointments, manage change, and build resilience
- Challenge themselves and go for their goals
When children learn how their mind works and discover that they have choices in how they think, feel, and respond, it’s transformative!
Impact on Families
The impact of a WISDOM Coach® often extends beyond the child and into everyday family life. Parents frequently notice more open conversations at home and their child taking greater responsibility for themselves, their schoolwork, and daily routines.
A child who once needed constant reminders to start homework may now sit down and begin on their own. A child who used to shut down when something felt hard may pause, take a breath, and keep going. These shifts don’t come from pressure or rewards, they come from children developing awareness, inner skills, and self-leadership.
As children learn to understand their thoughts and emotions, family dynamics often become calmer and more supportive. Parents spend less time managing behavior and more time encouraging growth, with shared language around mindset, effort, and choice.
Impact on the Coach
Becoming a WISDOM Coach® is often life-changing for coachines not only because of the positive impact they are having on children’s lives but because of the impact on their own life as well.
Many coaches describe this work as deeply meaningful. It allows them to use their strengths, values, and passion for personal development in a way that feels aligned and purposeful. Supporting children as they build confidence, resilience, and self-esteem often reinforces those same qualities within the coach.
WISDOM Coaches frequently share that the work helps them:
- Feel connected to a sense of purpose and contribution
- Use personal growth tools in a meaningful, real-world way
- Experience fulfillment through service rather than pressure
- Grow personally alongside the children they support
The mindset skills they help children develop using The Adventures in Wisdom Life Coaching for Kids Curriculum support them in their own life journey as well.
For many, WISDOM Coaching also creates the opportunity to earn income doing work they genuinely care about. Coaches are able to build a coaching practice around values that matter to them, helping children, supporting families, and making a positive difference, while creating a flexible sustainable way to do that work in the world.
This combination of impact and alignment is what makes WISDOM Coaching especially powerful for coaches. It allows them to make a difference in children’s lives while honoring their own calling, talents, and desire to contribute in a meaningful way.
A Ripple Effect That Lasts
Guided by the values and methodology created and stewarded by Adventures in Wisdom, WISDOM Coaches help children build an internal foundation they can rely on long after coaching ends. The skills for confidence, self-awareness, resilience, and self-leadership travel with them as they grow.
That is the lasting impact of a WISDOM Coach®: helping children grow from the inside out, in ways that shape their lives for years to come.
