“Helping a Child Manage Anxiety and Fear”
A lot of kids out there are struggling with anxiety and fear around the pandemic, especially with the emergence of the Delta strain. One of the core mindset skills that our life coaches teach kids is that emotions come from thoughts, and thoughts can be identified and changed. Watch this video to hear WISDOM Coach®, Inna Neal, share how she helped one boy realize that his brain seeks evidence for what he focuses on, and that he can change the stories he tells his brain.
The mindset skills WISDOM Coaches discussed:
WISDOM Coaches use stories, discussion and activities from The Adventures in Wisdom Life Coaching Program for Kids Curriculum to help kids learn, understand and practice essential mindset skills kids will use throughout their school years and for life.
Rahima:
- How your mind shapes your world – is taught with the story, “Who’s Flying Your Plane?” Kids learn how their mind works and the power of limiting and supporting beliefs.
- Self-esteem – is taught with the story “Yucky Me! Yahoo Me!” Kids learn what self-esteem is, how to develop it and do exercises to embed it
- Honoring Your Uniqueness – is taught with the story, “The Sun, The Wind and The Rain”. Kids learn to identify and honor what is unique about themselves and that the world needs the gifts that each of us has in order to work.
- Self-talk – is taught with the story, “Choosing Your BFF (Best Friend Forever)”. Kids learn what self-talk is, how to identify and shift negative self-talk and how to proactively develop positive self-talk. NOTE: This story and skill book is available for free.
Delia:
- “Power Shifting” – is taught the through the story, “Power Goggles”. Kids learn that they can put on their “Power Goggles” to look at something differently or find a new solution
- Self-confidence – is taught through the story, “Canville and Cantville, a Tale of Two Towns”. Kids learn how to stretch outside their comfort zone to build confidence to try something new.
Judy:
- “Managing Change” – is taught through the story, “Changes in Paradise”. Kids meet 5 animals who are forced to move from a home they love. Each animal reacts differently. One is sad, one is angry, one is in denial, one is scared, and one is excited. The story follows the animals through their move and helps to teach the three steps for managing change.
Bwalya:
- How your mind shapes your world – is taught with the story, “Who’s Flying Your Plane?” Kids learn how their mind works and the power of limiting and supporting beliefs.
- Honoring Your Uniqueness – is taught with the story, “The Sun, The Wind and The Rain”. Kids learn to identify and honor what is unique about themselves and that the world needs the gifts that each of us has in order to work. This girl especially liked doing “The Gift of Me” poster to identify what’s unique about her.
- Self-respect and respect for others are taught by the stories – “Make Your Mark with the Golden Rule” and “My Mark on Me”. They learn that each time we are with someone, we leave a mark – either a gold heart or a grungy mark. Kids love collecting hearts and pointing out hearts and marks to others as well
- Overcoming mistakes – is taught through the story, “The Weight of Mistakes”. Kids learn that mistakes aren’t who they are and they learn a process to learn from their mistakes and let them go.
Inna:
-
Understanding your reticular activating system (RAS) – is taught with the story, “RAS – Your Radar for Success”. The RAS is a part of our brain that subconsciously finds evidence for whatever we believe. So if we are afraid, the brain seeks reasons to confirm it’s right to be afraid.
“…so valuable because kids aren’t learning this [mindset skills] in school!”
“I don’t say this very often, but I highly recommend what you’re doing. It is so valuable, and it’s so complete. That’s what I love about it and, obviously, really effective.”
