“How a Child Learned Self-responsibility and Respect”
In this episode, WISDOM Coach®, Bwalya Penza shares how she used stories and skills from the “Resilience” coaching package to help a young girl learn to change limiting beliefs, identify what she likes about herself, choose self-responsibility and demonstrate respect for others and herself.
“She went from being someone who was so angry, upset, being disrespectful to her mom…to someone who now started considering people’s feelings and thinking about how she treats others. The power of story was very strong for her because we always identify with story. She was even relating what she learned about ‘gold hearts’ to her grandmother.”

The mindset skills Bwalya discusses in this video:
WISDOM Coaches use stories, discussion and activities to help kids learn, understand and practice essential mindset skills kids will use throughout their school years and for life.
Bwalya used the “Resilience” Coaching Package, with a few modifications, to teach the young girl various skills that would help her look at change:
-
How your mind shapes your world – is taught with the story, “Who’s Flying Your Plane?” Kids learn how their mind works and the power of limiting and supporting beliefs
-
Honoring Your Uniqueness – is taught with the story, “The Sun, The Wind and The Rain”. Kids learn to identify and honor what is unique about themselves and that the world needs the gifts that each of us has in order to work. This girl especially liked doing “The Gift of Me” poster to identify what’s unique about her
-
Self-respect and respect for others are taught by the stories – “Make Your Mark with the Golden Rule” and “My Mark on Me”. They learn that each time we are with someone, we leave a mark – either a gold heart or a grungy mark. Kids love collecting hearts and pointing out hearts and marks to others as well
-
Overcoming mistakes – is taught through the story, “The Weight of Mistakes”. Kids learn that mistakes aren’t who they are and they learn a process to learn from their mistakes and let them go.
“…so valuable because kids aren’t learning this [mindset skills] in school!”
“I don’t say this very often, but I highly recommend what you’re doing. It is so valuable, and it’s so complete. That’s what I love about it and, obviously, really effective.”
