Is it possible to teach kids to CHOOSE to respect teachers, tutors, parents, and others?
Yes!
If you’ve worked with kids – whether you’re a parent, teacher, tutor, or care giver – you’ve most likely experienced disrespectful children!
Educator, reading tutor, and online tutoring expert, Joanne Kaminski, recently interviewed Renaye Thornborrow, an expert on teaching mindset skills to kids. Renaye is the founder of Adventures in Wisdom Inc., a company that has certified hundreds of life coaches for kids on using a proven curriculum to teach mindset skills to children using stories and activities.
In the 3-minute video below, Joanne and Renaye discuss the mindset skill of RESPECT! In this video, they discuss how to teach kids to choose to respect teachers, tutors and other people in their lives.
Every time we’re with someone, we leave a mark!
Renaye shares that “One of the things we teach is that every time we’re with someone, we leave a mark. We leave either a gold heart or a grungy mark, based on how we treat them.”
Renaye tells the story of how 9-year-old Julie learned this concept during a life coaching for kids session about respect. Julie’s assignment for the week was to practice giving gold hearts. Her parents and siblings embraced the activity as well, and it was transformational for the whole family!
Joanne tells a story about working with a tutoring student who was disrespectful. She shares how one conversation led to “the most improved drastic changes through our sessions together.”

- A simple, fun way to teach kids about what respect is

The concept of “Hearts and Marks” is taught in a coaching story called “Make Your Mark with the Golden Rule”. This story helps kids choose to respect teachers, parents, their siblings and other kids as well.
This coaching story is one of 27 coaching stories used to teach mindset skills to kids 6-12.
You can request a free copy of one of the most popular coaching stories, “Choosing Your BFF ( Best Friend Forever)“, that teaches the mindset skill of self-talk.
This coaching story and skill book comes directly from the curriculum and includes both the Children’s Guide and Mentor’s Guide, so you have everything you need to teach this critical skill.
